Significant Web Failure Hits Numerous Sites and Mobile Apps

A widespread web outage has disrupted many online platforms and apps around the world, and users reporting issues getting online after problems at the online infrastructure system.

The affected apps encompass the social media app Snapchat, Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and Duolingo, along with several Amazon-operated operations such as its key e-commerce site and the Ring device manufacturer.

In the UK, Lloyds bank was disrupted along with its subsidiaries the bank Halifax and Bank of Scotland, and further notifications of problems reaching the HM Revenue and Customs online portal on Monday morning. Additionally in Britain, many Ring device owners took to social media to report their doorbells were malfunctioning.

Solely in the United Kingdom, accounts of issues on specific apps totaled the many thousands for every service.

Officials confirmed that the issue started in the eastern region of the United States at the cloud division, a unit that provides vital web framework for a host of companies, who lease capacity on the company's servers. The cloud platform is the biggest global cloud computing service.

Shortly after the start of the day (PDT) in the US (morning UK time), Amazon confirmed “elevated failure rates and latencies” for Amazon's platforms in a zone on the Atlantic seaboard of the US. The widespread consequence seemed to affect apps globally, and the problem monitoring service reporting issues with the corresponding services in multiple continents.

Cisco’s Thousand Eyes, a platform that reports on online failures, further indicated a surge in outages on the start of the week, and numerous instances situated in the state of Virginia, the location of Amazon’s US-East-1 region where AWS said the problems originated.
