British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of approach shafts down to the site... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of British forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," Healey said. "They were among numerous British personnel deployed over the festive period. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "large-scale strike" on Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations says IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
